Why Are Two Friends Raising Scholarship Funds for Children in India?

(Be sure to check Blog for new entries)

Lauren Brown from San Luis Obispo, CA and A.V. Samuel from Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh (A. P.), India are joining forces to raise scholarship funds for rural children in India to stay in Methodist dormitories and attend one of the nine Methodist schools in the Hyderabad Conference in Andhra Pradesh, India shown on the map below).  It takes remarkably little donation to support each student for a school year
  • $250/scholarship
  • Used for room and board, 2 uniforms, pens and paper to stay in a dormitory at the Methodist school

A Short History

These Methodist Schools were founded at least 60 years ago by Methodist missionaries, some as long ago as the mid-1800s. These schools grew steadily, bringing quality education to thousands of poor village children and doing so in the nurturing environment of a Christian school where the barriers of caste discrimination and poverty could be overcome.

The last of the foreign missionaries left India in the 1970s because of government restrictions on visas. The funds coming from the U.S. and elsewhere are much reduced and the Indian congregations were too poor to replace all the foreign support. This has left a very large gap in the ability of the Methodist Church in India to continue educating youth in India.  Many of these schools are facing severe financial challenges and many poor children in remote villages simply aren't getting the opportunity of an education in a Methodist school.  A. V. Samuel and Lauren Brown hope to help close this gap.  Please consider adding your support to enable these Methodist schools to continue providing good education to village youth in an environment reflecting a foundation of Christian principles and beliefs.
